Fit Clicks: Drink Ice, Ice Baby

Tip of the Day

ice water weight lossTip of the day is brought to you by Vanilla Ice (the video has the lyrics so you can finally know what it is that he says), just kidding. Actually various trainers suggest this like best selling author Jon Benson and Jeff Anderson. The last tip of the week was about drinks you should avoid if you are trying to lose fat.  Well, today I’m going to show a couple of drinks you must drink if you want to lose fat (fat loss is not all about prohibitions).

  1. Drink número 1 is ice water.  A German study showed that drinking ice water helps you boost your metabolism by 30% for next 2-3 hours.  Another great explanation of why it works so well is because your body needs to spend energy warming it up.  It takes 1 calorie to increase the temperature by one 1°C.  All you have to do is drink a glass (24 ounce) of ice cold water 2 hours before each meal and 1 hour after. That is it.
  2. Drink hot Cocoa:  This is a great drink that will help you chocolate lovers satisfy your cravings.  Cacao, the
    chocolate for weight loss

This is where chocolate comes from

fruit from which chocolate is made, is actually very healthy and good for weight loss.  This is the reason why dark chocolate (>70% Cacoa) is also a good treat.  Try to find an unsweetened version and follow the recipe on the back. If miss the sweetness, try using Stevia to give it a little kick. Sit back and enjoy.

  3. Fruit Juices:  I know a lot of nutritionist don’t recommend them, but not if you drink them my way.  First of all you can’t use any sugar with them.  Fruits have enough sugar all by themselves, so don’t add anymore. Secondly, leave the fiber.  Fiber is an essential nutrient that we must have in order to poop nicely without getting a hernia.  Thirdly, add some water to make it grow.  Most people drink their fruit juice to concentrated.  Adding a little water will make it more refreshing, and will save you some time.

Coach of the Day

Bret Contreras

He even has glutes on his chin.

Bret Contreras (a.k.a. The Glute Guy) is one of my favorite coaches because he helps women achieve rounder butts, something every man is thankful for. “We all like rounds butts and we cannot lie…” I got to know him through Twitter and loved what he had to say about fitness and glutes.  He is a PhD candidate, which just means that he has very little time.  If you want to read more about him and purchase his book you can go here.

Program of the Day

I would have placed Brets e-book here, but I haven’t read it so I’ll show you another great round butt developing program created by author Nick Nilsson.  The program is called Gluteus Maximus and it will help you get rid of cellulite and shape your butt.  It will look more like this:

Recipe of the Day

Chocolate is one of the foods people have the hardest time giving up when they are dieting.  Since I’m such a cool guy, I’m going to give you a recipe for chocolate pudding that you can make at home and eat without feeling guilty.  This recipe is from my friend Mike Geary author of the best selling book Truth About Abs.  Get the recipe here.

Hot Model of the Day

Since I’m such a tennis fan I choose Brooklyn Decker as Hot Model of the Day. Yes, I know she doesn’t play tennis, but she is married to Andy Roddick, so there is my excuse.  Check out her SI Swimsuit issue gallery, and this video of her teaching you some cardio moves (good for men and women).

TACFIT Video of the Day.

This I’m training for mi CST and TACFIT IC Course I wanted to show you some of the things I was doing.  The video above is the Israeli Challenge (nothing to do with Palestine) from the TACFIT Commando program.  If you want to know more about TACFIT you can check out my post here.

What is TACFIT?

TACFIT is the next step in Fitness Evolution. Where most men and women fall short, TACFIT Legionaires thrive. They don’t train to be strongr, faster, or agile, they just train to be better, because only better is better.

Who are these exceptional group of men and women you have never heard of?

To tell you the truth, you see them everyday.  They don’t have huge bulky muscles, they actually look like regular people.  What makes them different is their training.  They don’t use fancy equipment, they use fancy moves, and that is where the secret lies.  The tools they use are primal likecaptain america clubbells, medicine balls, gymnastic rings, sand bags, jump boxes, and parallette barsthat help them:

  1. Build functional power, stamina, and agility.
  2. Become biomechanically more efficient, while improving body alignment.
  3. Build GO muscle instead of show muscle, while developing incredible athleticism.
  4. Have fun while getting in the best shape of your life!!
While most fitness programs increase intensity by varying training variables like reps, set, weight and rest, TACFIT challenges you through movement sophistication.  Exercises don’t only get tougher because of added weight, but also through movement complexity.  All the workouts are high intensity helping you develop a stop and go power, and help you save time.  Depending on the program you choose, each movement may have 3 to 5 phases of sophistication.
TACFIT PROGRAMS
TACFIT 26 Gym Box- Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta
Commando- Commando, Grunt, and Recruit
Warrior- Commando, Grunt, Recruit, Pre-Recruit Mission, Lite Mission
TACFIT Gym- Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta
Mass Assault- Level 1,Level 2, Level 3, Level 4
TACFIT is born from the necessity to give rescue responders a tool that will help them perform tasks in inconvenient, if not adverse conditions. Where traditional fitness has failed, TACFIT has succeeded in providing a sustainable, functional physical preparedness which addresses performance fluidity not in merely one or two dimensions, but in the reality of three dimensions.  This is the real magic behind TACFIT.
Conventional Physical Training programs involve mono or bi-planar action on individual joints with long duration of single exercises, none of this contributes to you becoming better in you three dimensional world.  Our everyday actions require our body to act as a balanced matrix: “a sea of continuous tension pulling in with an architecture of compressive struts pushing out”. TACFIT increases this balance, by teaching the body to act as an integrated whole in every action.
Reaching the top begins with one step, I suggest you make it TACFIT.

Drink You Should Stay Away From of the Day

I’m a firm believer that what we drink is making us more fat than what we eat.  So today’s tip of the day is… Avoid anything that comes in a Box, Can, has alcohol, or plastic container. The reason: All of these drinks contain High Fructose Corn Syrup which is public enemy número 1 when it comes to weight loss (Read why here).  This is what you should be drinking:

  1. Water:  You can never go wrong drinking water.  When it comes to weight loss water is one of your best allies.
  2. Lemon juice with water:  If you don’t like water like my mom, then I recommend you squeeze a fresh lemon inside to give it some taste.  Lemon juice has an additional benefit; it helps reduce insulin levels (Read why this is good here).
  3. Natural Fruit Juice:  Natural fruit juice can be tricky, because if you don’t prepare it right it can actually make you gain weight.  First thing you must avoid is removing the fiber.  Fiber is an essential nutrient that has tons of benefits, one of the being increasing the time of absorption of sugars (this prevents insulin spikes and cravings).  Don’t add any sugar or artificial sweeteners.
  4. Homemade Ice Tea:  This is one of my favorite recipes for drinks, because it adds all of the above.  All you have to do is put some fruit in a pot full of water, let it boil with some tea bags, and let it cool for a couple of minutes.

Fat Loss Program of the Day

The Super Hero Workout was created by self proclaimed pretty boy John Romaniello,

Fitness model body

author of the best selling fat loss program Final Phase Fat Loss . With all the superhero movies out this year, John decided to create this program in order to help guys achieve that sexy and delicious body girls crave (Not all of them do, but most of them prefer firm biceps, than man boobs).

John has teamed up with Matt McGorry (Read some of his accomplishments here) in order to produce the best fitness program possible.  There are four phases you must complete which are:

  1. Strength and Power
  2. Speed and Agility
  3. Mass and Increased Strength
  4. Density and Aesthetic Fitness
Here are some of the benefits you will get after finishing the 4 phases:
  1. Get rid of all those nagging weak spots that put a “stain” on your all the effort  you’ve put in
  2. Zap away any remaining pounds of fat that didn’t get the hint the first time around, for the lowest overall body fat count you’ve ever known
  3. Find out which “power foods” actually generate muscle and when is the best time to eat them.
  4. Find out how Spiderman’s wall crawling abilities  and Scarlett Johansson’s killer moves in Iron Man 2 are connected to toning and defining every last muscle to its maximum point.

Fitness Model of The Day

I’m not going to be one of those guys that only puts female models.  I want to give my female audience something to entertain their sight with.  Today I’m going to introduce to you Nick Auger.  I have no idea who he is and I’m not wasting my time looking him up. I’m not good with male models names, so I would really appreciate you leaving a comment with some of their names.

Weight Loss is Like Going to College

You must be thinking how on earth is losing weight compared to going to college?  College was one of the best moments in my
life; parties, booze, sports, and learning were some of the things I enjoyed most as a student. Yes, there was the studying and lab work which I didn’t enjoy much, but overall being in college was a lot of fun. Weight loss on the other hand is everything but fun; no booze, no parties, tasteless food, starving to death, hours of cardio and other stuff we don’t quite relate with having a good time.

So how can I dare compare the two?

When I began thinking about the analogy I thought I was stupid too, but just listen up.

College is a 4 year (or 7 in my case) process you must go through in order to obtain a title and have a greater chance of being “successful” for the rest of your life.  Each course is a prerequisite for the next; you can’t take calculus 3 without having passed calculus 2.  It is all about learning and applying what you have learned.

You can’t get your title in 2 or 3 months, it just doesn’t work like that, right? You wouldn’t be a very good professional if you did.

Same thing happens with weight loss.  It is a process where on step leads to a higher more advanced step until you finally reach your goal.  People, magazines and TV may tell you there are short cuts, but just as in college, you won’t find long term success if you take them.

Weight loss is about learning the whats, the whys, whos, and the hows.

What you can and cannot eat, or what exercises you can and cannot do?

Why these things are good or bad for you, or why the are effective or not?

Who are the coaches, friends, and family that can help you reach those goals?

How are you going to fit all these elements together into a successful plan?

Finding the answer to all these questions is a long process where patience and trust are key.

You must be asking about the fun? College was fun, but weight loss isn’t, so they don’t compare. Actually weight loss can be tons of fun, and the internet is full of fun options.  You don’t have to starve yourself or deprive yourself of the things you like, your just going to measure yourself.

If you partied and got drunk everyday in college I bet you would have graduated, same thing goes for weight loss.  If you ice cream, burgers, and  junk food everyday you won’t lose weight; but if you measure yourself, just like Joel Marion makes you do on his diet Cheat Your Way Thin then the sky is the limit.  You don’t have to starve yourself either, it is all about learning what you should and shouldn’t eat.  If you are not much of a cook I suggest you check out Jamie Oliver’s website.  He has tons of healthy recipes you can use, which are fast and simple to make.

Exercise wise remember to take things slow, especially if you are sedentary.  I would being with 3 days a weeks.  Look for a program that fits your taste, and that you consider fun.  Fun is important if you want to go reach your goals.  I wouldn’t have made it through college if I never had fun.  Fun is a very key element you must find in order to stick to your plan.

I don’t care if you are practicing sports or doing crossfit, what ever it is just stick to it.  Try to stick to your plan as much as possible.  Skipping a session is like missing class, it will put you behind on your goals.

As you can see there are a lot of similarities.  Treat your weight loss just like you did college. Have fun, but also take it very seriously.  Choose your friends and coaches wisely, and I bet you will have tons of fun and success.

Fit Clicks: Secret of Your Success: Sticking to it

Tip of the Day

Thanks to the internet the world has become more globalized, and thus more competitive.  We have to stay on our toes or else somebody else can take our place.  Our bosses want results now (our if you’re the boss you want results now).  This need for speed translates to every aspect of our life, including body transformation.  When dieting or working out you want results fast.  You begin a new diet, and if you don’t get results within a week or so you get frustrated, drop it, and begin a new one.

Fortunately, our bodies are not up to speed with the 21 century.  They’re still in the stone age, where everything was more relaxed.  The key to success when it comes to changing the way you look is… patience.  Sticking to your initial plan is fundamental.  Choose a coach you trust, and stick to what he says, even if his methods don’t always go with common beliefs. Correction: especially if it doesn’t go with common beliefs.

Most of what you hear in the street comes from magazines and commercials, which aren’t very good sources of information.

Dansinger et al, (2005)  showed that 4 of the most popular diets, if followed properly during a whole year, would throw the same results.  This comes to show that it is not the diet that matters when it comes to results, but your patience in following it.

Coach of the Day

Since I touched the diet subject I wanted to introduce you to Joel Marion.  Joel is a former Body for Life Champion. Withregards to his professional education and credentials, Joel holds Bachelor of Science degrees in both Exercise Science and Health Education from The College of New Jersey, where he graduated with honors, Magna Cum Laude.  He is also certified as a sports nutritionist and personal trainer through the nation’s premiere certification agencies, the International Society of Sports Nutrition and National Strength and Conditioning Association, respectively.

Program of the Week

Joel has a couple of weight loss programs, including a membership site, but today I’m only going to focus on his Xtreme Fat Loss Diet.  I went on this diet to lose an excess 10lbs that I had after living in Barcelona the past 2 years.  The diet promises 25lbs off in 25 days by managing your leptin levels.  I won’t lie to you, there is also a workout you have to do, but as you know, weight loss success is achieved at the table not in the gym.

Training for CST and TACFIT IC Course

As you might know I have signed up for the CST and TACFIT Instructor Course (join me here), and I’m going to change my workout a bit.  I want to keep training my gymnastic skills while incorporating every thing I’m going to get tested on at the IC course.  I’m going to try to fit everything in a 4X7 cycle, so it is going to look something like this:

Day 1

Intu- Flow

  1. Ranges
  2. Circles
  3. Infinities
  4. Clovers (not sure if these are part of the IC course, but I’m still going to practice them).
I’ll begin from the ankles up, because my lower body is were I present the most trouble.

Day 2

Swimming.My swim Blog

Nothing relaxes me more than the pool, so I guess I’ll be working on some technique drills, some long boring cardio, which is like meditation for me, and I’ll probably fit in some sprints.  I know it doesn’t sound very low intensity, but I’ve been doing it the last couple of weeks, and I haven’t had any issues training the next day.

Prasara Yoga

I need to start improving my range on motion, and the best way to do this is with Prasara Yoga.  I’m beginning with the Diving Dolphin, just because I like dolphins, no other reason.

Day 3

I’ll begin my day walking the dog, and working on muscle ups and plyometric jumps.  I usually do the about 5 sets of each with a lot of rest in between.  Once I get home I’ll begin with…

5 sets with 2 min rest of:
  1. Handstand push ups
  2. Lever raises
  3. V’s
Then…

Day 4

The day begins the same as day 3 and continues with some strength training:

5 sets with 2 min rest of:
  1. SL Squats
  2. RLL Raises
  3. Planche progressions
I’ll the continue with TACFIT Commando Recruit level Mission 3.
I’ll keep my nutrition just how it is, and I’ll probably have to Intu-Flow more often to recover faster. I’ll keep you posted to see how my first microcycles turns out.  I’ll begin tomorrow and some of my training to keep you updated.
